Farmers invited to explore water security options

Eyre Peninsula farmers can explore practical ways to improve on-farm water security at two Sticky Beak Days in Warramboo and Wharminda this August.

Attendees will hear from special guest speaker Dr Richard George, the senior principal research scientist at the Department of Primary Industry & Regional Development (DPIRD) from Western Australia, who will present on WaterSmart options and on-farm desalination learnings from the Western Australian wheatbelt.

The days will also feature expert speakers from Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board, SA Water and South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), the research division of the South Australian Government’s Department of Primary Industries and Regions South Australia (PIRSA).

SARDI senior consultant Brian Hughes said the events come at an important time for the region.

“Water is one of the most limiting resources for many farms on the Eyre Peninsula. With drought, declining natural recharge and increased demand, it is essential we adopt best-practice strategies to capture, store, treat, and monitor on-farm water,” he said.

“These Sticky Beak Days will give farmers insights into regional and on-farm water security, enhancing water harvesting, storage and distribution, on-farm desalination plus insights into other water options, water regulations and groundwater use.”

The Warramboo session will be on Wednesday, August 27 from noon to 5pm (including lunch) and the Wharminda session on Thursday, August 28 from 9.30am to 2.30pm (including morning tea and lunch).

Registration is essential – register for Warramboo at eventbrite.com.au/e/ep-farm-water-security-workshop-warramboo-tickets-1468223990479 and Wharminda at eventbrite.com.au/e/ep-farm-water-security-workshop-wharminda-tickets-1422841389899

The EP Farm Water Security project has the primary aim of reducing net demand on the SA Water network.

The project is led by PIRSA and SARDI, with project partners SA Water, Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board, AWI Extension SA and AgCommunicators.
