Mice in moderate numbers on Eyre Peninsula

Mice numbers across the country as highlighted in the latest Mouse Activity Report. (Mouse Update)

Farmers need to be vigilant with mouse activity on Eyre Peninsula, according to the latest Mouse Activity Report.

The April 2025 report from the CSIRO and Grains Research and Development Corporation has highlighted moderate activity in the region.

“Mouse activity is very patchy – moderate in one field, but low in the next. Growers should remain vigilant.” it said.

“Moderate to high numbers will lead to damage at sowing.”

The report noted mouse numbers were generally low across the country, except for Eyre Peninsula, parts of Western Australia, Wimmera of Victoria and high activity in Queensland’s Darling Downs and Roma.

EP’s moderate activity was deemed to be in isolated patches.

Growers are advised to actively gauge mouse numbers by: walking through paddocks – with most chew cards and active burrow counts useful tools at this time of year; apply bait off the back of the seeder to prevent damage to freshly sown crops; reduce background food through light tillage or sheep grazing; and talking to bait suppliers early to ensure timely supply.

New mouse forecast models are being developed and will be run once data have been collected from June and July mouse monitoring.
