The federal government recently announced a national food security strategy after pledging $3.5 million in funding.
The government has called out climate change as a key risk to food security, which will be independently overseen by the National Food Council.
Farmers for Climate Action (FCA) welcomed the government’s announcement to develop a national food security strategy Feeding Australia.
FCA chief executive officer Natalie Collard said the plan to work with farmers and industry experts, while addressing the growing impact of droughts, fires and floods worsened by climate change, was to be applauded.
“Food security is national security,” she said.
“Farmers grow our food and farmers need a stable climate.
“A strategy that incorporates practical, science-backed solutions – including support for regenerative and climate-smart agriculture – is a great start.”
Ms Collard said a focus on greater food supply, stronger food security and sustainable agriculture would help safeguard farmers’ livelihoods and provide greater certainty for consumers.
FCA also welcomed the government’s commitment to exploring the potential of a biofuels feedstock industry as Australia reduced its emissions and continued exporting its clean, green produce.
The organisation said it looked forward to working alongside farmers, industry leaders and policymakers to ensure the strategy delivers practical, long-term benefits for rural and regional communities.
“Recognising the reality that climate change affects food security is a vital step towards a strong and secure food supply,” Ms Collard said.
