Grain Producers SA (GPSA), in partnership with Fat Farmers, is supporting grain producers and regional communities across the state, including Ceduna and Cowell.

The gatherings are designed to provide farmers and community members with a chance to connect, share a bite to eat, and if needed, chat with support services in an informal setting.

GPSA chief executive officer Brad Perry said many South Australian grain producers were facing challenging times due to the severity of the current drought, with some regions recording record low growing season rainfall this year.

“These events are open to everyone – whether you’re a grain producer, a local community member, or part of the broader agriculture industry. We encourage people to come along, have a chat, and take advantage of the resources and support on offer,” he said.

“These barbecues offer a space for people to take a break, share a bite to eat, and connect with others who are going through similar experiences.”

Mr Perry said it was great to partner with Fat Farmers, plus organisations such as the Department of Primary Industries and Regions SA, ifarmwell and Rural Business Support, to host the events.

“It’s not just about providing a bite to eat – it’s about creating a supportive environment where people can come together, talk, and get off farm for a couple of hours.

“In tough times, the strength of our farming communities is remarkable.

“We’re hopeful these barbecues will offer some relief, connection, and support to those who need it most.”

In addition to the barbecues, attendees can participate in a walk, run or light exercise prior to each breakfast at 8.30am organised by Fat Farmers.

Fat Farmers chairman Richard Sheppy said looking out for each other was vital in challenging times.

“We are undoubtedly facing one of the toughest seasons for a long time and community connection has never been more important,” he said.

“At Fat Farmers we encourage connection through exercise and would invite everyone to join us for a walk, jog or some light-hearted activities to kick-start these events.

“Why not leave the work boots at home and pull on the joggers for a couple of hours? We are pretty sure you will feel better for it.”

The Ceduna event will be at the Ceduna Blues Football Club on Monday, December 9 from 8.30am to 10.30am.

Cowell Football Club will host the final event on Tuesday, December 10 from 8.30am to 10.30am.

At each event Fat Farmers will host a walk, run or light exercise from 8.30am, with breakfast at 9am.
