The Melbourne Cup day race held at Smoky Bay varies from year to year – and this year had nine sheep dog puppies taking part.
Those at the Smoky Bay and Districts Community Club for the annual cup lunch formed syndicates for a Calcutta to bid for the pups.
All pups were placed in the centre of the floor, with the winner being the first puppy to cross a rope circle.
The winning syndicate consisted of Sophie and Vinnie Kellett, James Boylan, Nanette Chandler and Sarah Evans.
The puppies were supplied by Simon Webb, who found homes for all of them at the event.
One of the event organisers, Nanette Chandler, said during the telecast of the Melbourne Cup itself the roof was “almost lifted off” with the excitement of Streaky Bay trainer Tony McEvoy and his son Calvin’s Half Yours claiming victory.
