Applications open for Country Arts SA program

Country Arts SA’s professional development program for visual artists is now accepting expressions of interest.

This opportunity for the Nebula program is available for up to eight emerging and early career artists from across regional South Australia, offering them the chance to attend three days of workshops, forums and networking events in Adelaide later this year.

Country Arts SA visual arts program manager Lauren Mustillo said Nebula was a unique visual arts program for regional South Australia.

“Over three days of workshops, forums, and networking opportunities – with some of South Australia’s most brilliant and respected curators, artists and arts leaders – this program unlocks a wide range of professional opportunities and shows artists how to access them,” she said.

“We’re looking for emerging or early career artists from regional SA who want to enhance their sector knowledge, connect with peers, and be taken seriously as an artist.”

Kirsty Murdock, a 2023 participant from Mannum in the Murraylands, said Nebula changed her life.

“I had so many doubts about my art and my life as an artist. I feel more at ease, supported, encouraged and motivated,” she said.

“It’s richly rewarding just to have someone believe in you. [It] gives me such hope.”

This year’s Nebula will be held September 3 to 5, aligning with key arts events, including the Country Arts SA Breaking Ground exhibition at Praxis Artspace.

It is designed to help emerging and early-career artists based in regional South Australia take the next steps in their career.

Over the course of three days, participants will gather in Adelaide to create meaningful relationships with fellow regional artists, metro-based artists, curators and gallery directors. Previous years have included writing workshops, gallery visits and curator talks, alongside guidance for social media and an online profile, and the business side of art with workshops on grants and funding applications.

Nebula is one of a host of professional development offerings supported by Country Arts SA, including the Breaking Ground award, Intersection and Catapult mentorships – delivered in collaboration with Guildhouse.

Expressions of interest are open now and close at 5pm on Monday, May 19. Attendance is free.

Country Arts SA supports successful applicants with accommodation, meals and incidentals, and travel assistance.
