Former students celebrate 60th birthdays with reunion

A Cleve Area School class held a reunion to mark the year the students turned 60.

The former pupils attended the school between 1971 and 1982, with most of them born in 1965.

The class also held a reunion a decade ago to mark their 50th birthdays.

The group and their partners gathered at Arno Bay Hotel on Saturday, March 8 – travelling from Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia and throughout South Australia.

Teachers from the era to join them included Michael and Helen Moore (ACT), Doug and Dawn Greig, Kevin Knott and his wife Judy.

On the afternoon of Sunday, March 9 they took a step back in time with a guided tour of the school by deputy principal Callum Agnew.

Many of the former classrooms and buildings have been removed, but visiting the technical studies’ room was a step back into yesteryear, as not a lot had changed in 40-odd years.

Mr Knott was delighted to see that some of the tool holders he had designed and made were hanging on the walls and still being used.

Many stories were recalled by the students of incidents in and out of class.

The school’s staff room was the home economics rooms when they went to school.

The class gathered there where Robert “Chub” Heaysman lit six muffin cakes, one for each decade, and they sang Happy Birthday to themselves.

A carload visited Sims Farm and took in the views from the lookout.

Sunday evening’s meal was held at the Cleve Hotel, with two more classmates able to join in.

That was followed by sharing stories and banter, with each person telling two truths and a lie.

Although some were reluctant to join in initially, the group had fun guessing the mis-truths.

The class agreed to hold another reunion within the next 10 years, and thanked the two class organisers for a great weekend.
