Health visit informative for men’s shed

Ceduna and Districts Men’s Shed members were fortunate to participate in a highly informative and relevant presentation delivered by prostate cancer specialist nurse Janet Birkin last weekend.

The Tumby Bay-based nurse provided members with a detailed explanation of her role and what it entailed, plus provided a range of reasons why issues relating to a man’s prostate were important, particularly if you had a family history of prostate cancer or were over 50.

It was highlighted that a PSA test should be conducted each year to ensure that your prescribed levels were within the accepted range and also to identify if there had been significant increases that required further investigation.

In informing those present of the types of symptoms that could occur, Janet emphasised the need to make an early appointment with your doctor, rather than dismissing them, and leaving it too late for treatment options to be successful.

Providing this position and service to the men of Eyre Peninsula was acknowledgement of the need to raise the awareness of prostate issues and to ensure that support was accessible and readily available.

Ceduna and Districts Men’s Shed sincerely thanks the Eyre and Far North Local Health Network for its continued and strong commitment to the health of EP residents.
