Cowell students who won the South Australian Anzac Schools’ competition in 2021 recently decided to donate $1500 of the prize money to an RSL project.
Students from that year 9-10 history class who won the prize decided to make the donation to the Cowell RSL Sub-Branch for artwork at the Remembrance Park, which is being developed on the town’s foreshore.
Cowell RSL secretary Sue Grund said the park would contain three metal silhouettes – a lighthorseman and his horse, a bugler and a war dog.
All 38 World War I and World War II veterans recognised on the town’s cenotaph would be named on three plaques, along with a bit of a story about their lives.
“They are not just a name, they had a life and were much loved family members,” Sue said.
The $10,000 cost of the metal for the metal cutouts is to be funded by Franklin Harbour District Council, the RSL, community donations and hopefully, another grant.
Those wanting to find out more about the Remembrance Park plans could view a display in the old butcher’s shop window.
The former Cowell Area School students also donated $1000 to a school on the Kokoda Track, in Papua New Guinea.
