Cowell Oval’s horse stables are getting a new lease of life – some in their original position and others at Cowell Ag Museum.
At the museum one set of stables will be retained as horse stalls to house horse memorabilia and the other section modified to store old farm implements.
Moving the stables several hundred metres across Lincoln Highway was the result of many people chipping in to help.
Cowell Lions helped Franklin Harbour History Museum to move some of the stables to the back of the museum.
Initially, Cowell Lions prepared the stalls for shifting, with several individuals and businesses donating their services to the project.
Ron Elleway’s crane and Geoff Piggott and Dave Franklin’s trucks successfully relocated the stables several months ago.
Turner’s Ready Mixed Concrete donated the concrete to put the stables in their permanent home, with Lions members helping out.
The Cowell Ag Museum is open a couple of days a week for a small donation to view some interesting old equipment, including the Ruston Proctor Steam Tractor.
The tractor will soon be back on display after being restored to working order by the Cobdogla Steam Traction Society.
If anyone is interested in getting the necessary accreditation to operate the Ruston Tractor please contact Bev Horder or Betty Franklin.
Subject to gaining grant funding Cowell Lions will undertake another joint project with Franklin Harbour History Museum to rehabilitate the Wilton Road Tanks and the MacGregor tanks.
The stables remaining at the oval are being converted into a viewing area for the silo mural by Franklin Harbour Community Development Group.
Pavers have recently been laid and tables and seating will be added, along with signs giving information on some of Cowell’s history.
