Tumby comes together for carols

The community of Tumby Bay enjoyed Carols by the Beach on Sunday, December 17, hosted by Tumby Bay Interchurch Council.

Event coordinator Kathy Brand said it had been her dream to hold the carols event several years ago.

“I approached our Interchurch Council,” she said.

“While there have been different venues used this year, our outdoor celebration was wonderful.

“The venue was perfect with every church from across our district involved.”

Many Tumby businesses and organisations came together for the program, consistently attracting about 400 people.

The program opened with the ancient sounds of didgeridoo played by Lyndon Dempsey as words of Scripture from John 1 were read.

Miriam Telfer ably led a band and community singing of a variety of carols.

Glenys Sauturaga conducted the Scripture Union Lunchtime Group from Tumby Bay Area School, dressed as angels and shepherds who had learned Auslan (sign language) to accompany their singing.

Representing wellbeing and suicide prevention group Beacon of Hope, Gladys Fleming gave a Christmas blessing – speaking of the hope we can all have.

Proceeds and donations from the night were still coming in and were set to go to Mwandi in Zambia.

Naylene Campbell-Webb spoke about her year 11 research project on the topic of food security, which included travelling to visit Africa and learn more.

Glenys Sauturaga, a member of the carols team, said the year had been challenging and that the event was an expression of togetherness.

“It’s a reminder that Christmas is for everyone, regardless of age or how we choose to vote,” she said.

“An idea that came together this year was volunteers transporting some of our elderly residents from Uringa Hostel who enjoyed the event from the comfort of our community bus.

“Quite a few new families have moved into our district so it was good to see them attend and join in this community celebration.”

The event had food and craft stalls, face painting, musicians and singers.

There was also a living nativity complete with baby Mavis Pearson who’s parents Dion and Bree had travelled from Adelaide to spend Christmas with family.

The event organisers thank the Tumby Bay District Council, Lions Club, Tumby Bay Progress Association, Smiths Haulage and Curtis’s.
