Crop walk showcases latest research outcomes

More than 50 farmers, agronomists, researchers and industry stakeholders visited trial sites across Eyre Peninsula last month to explore the latest in the region’s farming.

The site visits included discussions ranging from alternative weed control methods to managing fungicide resistance in canola.

The 2025 Ag Innovation and Research Eyre Peninsula (AIR EP) Lower Eyre Peninsula Crop Walk, held on 9 September, took participants to sites at Yallunda Flat, Cummins, Edillilie and Coulta, where leading researchers presented their trial findings from a number of local projects.

AIR EP executive officer Naomi Scholz said the event shared several agronomic insights that made the trip well worth the journey.

“We have several projects underway across the Lower Eyre Peninsula, and it was exciting to travel to the crop trial sites and hear firsthand from these leading researchers about the latest outcomes,” she said.

Ms Scholz spoke about the main findings to come out of the crop walk.

“Among the key findings was the development of strategies to combat herbicide resistance in ryegrass. This has been a problem locally, but the trial revealed encouraging alternatives that growers may be able to apply on-farm,” she said.

“Researchers also gave an important update on fungicide resistance in canola. This was a hot topic, as the Lower EP is the only region in Australia where SDHI fungicide resistance in canola has been recorded.

“This year’s Lower Eyre Peninsula Crop Walk provided valuable insights, strategies and updates for our growers, which will help them develop their own on-farm management approaches to continue to improve their properties’ productivity and sustainability.”

Following the success of the crop walk, AIR EP is now preparing for its annual general meeting.

Members are encouraged to attend the meeting, which will be held online on Friday 17 October from 8.30am.

AIR EP also has more crop walks and sticky beak days planned across the EP in coming weeks.
