Cowell woman Rhonda Lum was the fastest knitter at a competition held in Cleve on Friday, finishing marginally in front of Cleve’s Janys Asser.
The competition was the brainchild of Rudall SA Country Women’s Association handicraft officer Mary Edwards.
SACWA members travelled from Lock, Wudinna, Rudall and Arno Bay branches, but not all of the 17 women and one girl who entered were members.
Competitors each knitted 50 rows of 30 stitches on supplied yarn and needles, with Cleve woman Val Gale’s entry judged the neatest.
The second neatest square was by Raelene Stringer, with Gwen Smith third.
Val was equal third in the speed section, tying with Arno Bay member Jenny Arnold.
The women attending suggested the competition become an annual event.
The squares knitted on the day will be made into a blanket to go to a charity on Eyre Peninsula.
Ungarra SACWA member Helen Kroemer judged the competition which was held at Maeve’s Newsagency on Friday, August 15.
There was a $100 first prize, with the second and third-placed knitters receiving vouchers from Bendigo Woolen Mills.
There were also many other prizes given out and coffee and morning tea was enjoyed by those watching.
