HomeRuralDrought relief available

Drought relief available

While rain and flash flooding wreak havoc across some states, other parts of the country – including South Australia – remain drier than ever.

From parched paddocks to struggling livestock, the ongoing drought continues to hit primary producers hard.

To help, Services Australia is reminding farming families that support is available through the Farm Household Allowance (FHA).

Once a claim is approved, a dedicated farm household case officer will contact recipients to offer guidance and ongoing support.

This officer will help farmers develop a financial improvement agreement – a tailored plan outlining steps to strengthen their financial position.

A key feature of the FHA is the $10,000 activity supplement, which can be used for business training, regenerative agriculture courses, drone or pilot licences, teaching credentials, or even to help establish farm-stay accommodation.

The goal is to give farmers the flexibility to explore new ways to improve their income and resilience – both short and long-term.

Whether hardship is due to tough seasons, market pressures, illness, or other challenges, the FHA is designed to help farmers get back on track.

Farmers receiving the allowance must provide an annual update on their financial position, helping their case officer adapt support as needed.

Eligible farmers may receive:

– A fortnightly payment of $715 to $1011, for up to four years within a 10-year period (depending on circumstances)

– A professional financial assessment by an adviser of their choice

– An activity supplement of up to $10,000 for advice, training, study or mental health support

– Support from a dedicated case officer throughout the process.

To discuss individual circumstances and how to apply, farmers can call the free Farmer Assistance Hotline on 132 316.

Free and independent counselling is also available through the Rural Financial Counselling Service on 1300 771 741.
